Indian Terrain:- Upland plain (Deccan Plateau) in south India, flat to rolling plain along the Ganges, deserts in western region of India, Himalayas in northern region. India is a vast country covering an area of 32,87,782 sq. km. The Himalayas, stretching from east to west in the north, form the northern boundary.The mighty mountain ranges separate India from China and Nepal. Where the Himalayan ranges end, there begin the great northern plains, are flat. They are drained by a number of rivers, the Ganga being the most important of them all. The Brahmaputra is another major north Indian river. The Indus (Sindh) flows in the north-west direction.The Deccan plateaus, south of the plains, have ranges of hills along the eastern and western coasts of the peninsula. The Krishna and the Godavari are the major rivers of the south. There are ranges of hills even in the north-east. In the west the plains of the Punjab merge into the Thar Desert. That is why India has rich variety of landscapes and climates.

Elevation extremes: The lowest point in India: Indian Ocean 0 m and highest point is Mount Kanchenjunga 8,598 metres above sea level.
India is as large as a continent with a varying climate. Broadly speaking October to March tend to be the most pleasant months over much of the country. But you can always find a suitable place with your choice of climate according to your month of travel. If you are travelling during the summer months, the Northern part that borders the world's longest mountain range, the Himalays is pleasant. The South also has its hill stations and most certainly the mountains of Kashmir, Himachal Pradesh, North Uttar Pradesh. The famous hill resorts of the South like Kodai Kanal, Ootacamund and Croog, beside Darjeeling, Sikkim are recommended in summer.
India has three major seasons - winter - summer and the monsoon. Winter months (November-March) are bright and pleasant, with snowfall in the northern hills. Summer time (April-June) is hot in most parts of India, and it is then that the numerous hill resorts provide cool retreat. During the monsoon, rainfall is heavy along the west coast between June and September, and along the east coast between mid-October and December.
In the far south, the monsoonal weather pattern tends to make January to September more pleasant, while Sikkim and the areas of northeastern India tend to be more palatable between March and August, and Kashmir and the mountainous regions of Himachal Pradesh are at their most accessible between May and September. The deserts of Rajasthan and the northwestern Indian Himalayan region are at their best during the monsoon.
The trekking season in the Indian Himalaya runs roughly from April to November, though this varies widely depending on the trek, altitude and region. The ski season is between January and March.
